Expected Publish Date: January 21, 2014 by Balzar + Bray
Jeth Seagrave is the leader of the Malleus Shades, the galaxy’s most accomplished and elusive band of teenage mercenaries. Working for feared crime boss Hammer Defoe, Jeth and his crew have made their name stealing unsecured metadrives – the complex piece of technology that makes faster-than-light-speed travel possible. The ITA–the far-reaching organization that produces and polices metatechnology–has been on Jeth’s tale for years, and is looking for any chance to take down Hammer’s black market metatech trade.
But Jeth doesn’t care about any of this. All he wants to do is earn enough money to purchase his parents’ ship, Avalon, from Hammer. His parents, former ITA scientists, were executed for treason years back, and Jeth, his sister Lizzie, and their uncle Milton fell into debt to Hammer. Finally, Jeth has found himself just one job away from freedom. This job, however, is going to give Jeth much, much more than he bargained for – and when he finds himself in possession of information that both Hammer and the ITA will kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he’ll go to get the freedom he’s dreamed of for so long.
So I already read this but its on here BECAUSE ITS EPIC! I loved the story and I loved the characters. I also ship the wrong ship but alas I am weird like that. I also have a strong love for one of the girl characters that you would not expect. *sigh* Mindee, CAN I READ YOU MANUSCRIPT FOR THE SEQUEL. Also, I love Jethro!!!

Alex

Blog Tour Stop: Broken Faith by Brandy Nacole

HELLO, PEOPLES! Today I am the Blog Tour Stop for the Broken Faith Blog Tour!

Broken_Faith.jpg
"This is it. The moment Heaven and Hell clash. But which unearthly being will win, the fallen angel or Hell's hounds?

Overtaken by fear, I close my eyes."

Kayson is a Fallen Angel who has spent decades running from the Hell Hounds while searching for something that no one else believes can be so, not even God. Kayson is determined to find a Blood Child. But when a hound finds Kayson first, he is sure his end has come.
Falon, Alpha of the Hell Hounds, destroyer of the blood children, and devoted believer in his master’s plan, is bound and determined to drag Kayson back to Hell with him.
Sabrina is a Vampire, a half-breed created from one of Lucifer’s original blood children. After years of hiding, Sabrina’s fate changes when she finds Kayson barely alive. Against her instincts, Sabrina saves him. Now she and Kayson are both marked by the Hell Hounds.
Emma is an ordinary human, whose only problem is making ends meet, and getting over the hurt caused by her untrustworthy brother. Her everyday problems become supernatural ones when she finds Kayson and Sabrina hiding in her parent’s backyard shed.

Kayson, Sabrina and Emma are unlikely allies, thrown together by chance to fight against the most powerful creatures of the underworld in order to follow their world-changing quest. But will the broken faith of one break the faith of all?

Below I have an interview with one of the main characters, Sabrina (which I fangirled about)

Q: What was running through your mind when you decided to live in the wild?

I was scared.  I knew I had an advantage over the hell hounds because their call did not affect me, but man do they have some sniffers.  I didn’t know how long I would survive but I was determined to do just that, survive.

Q: Why did you decide to help Kayson?

That was a hard decision for me to make.  I didn’t know his intent.  He could have easily turned on me.  But seeing him lying there, on the brink of death, caused me to pause.  It brought back painful memories of my past.  I had been left, thinking I was going to die, and watched as all hope turned away.  For some reason, I couldn’t do that to him.

Q: Why did you take so well to Briston?

It was strange, but when I met Briston, I felt no threat from him.  I could tell he was only trying to protect Emma.  He was curious, like most would be, but in an admiring way.

Q: How and Why did you develop feelings for Kayson

At first I just felt a need to protect him.  He was the first person I had really talked to in over a century and against my better judgment I didn’t want to lose that.  I had went so long being alone, and having him understand made it hard to let go.  The longer I was around him and saw the fight and fierce protection in his eyes, my feelings started to grow for him.  I knew it was dangerous and foolish, but he is a man to admire.

Q: How do you feel about the Fallen Angels?

I do have mixed feelings about the fallen, especially with Steele.  Unlike Kayson, the others only judge us half’s.  They deem us damned and want no part in helping us.  On some level I understand why they feel that way, it was the way they were taught.  But after meeting Kayson, I wonder why the rest can’t see the possibilities that he sees.

Q: Why did you hate Emma so much at first?

I felt she was a threat.  Her denying what was so plainly in front of her only infuriated me.  I guess you could say I was harsh on her.  When I was human, I know that I probably would have had the same doubt.  But what really irritated me was the way Kayson had reacted to her.  He seemed so eager to tell her our stories yet when I asked him any such questions, he wouldn’t answer me the way he did her.  My harshness toward her was led by jealousy  and envy.

Review: Guys, this book was so awesome! I really loved it! It's plot was well done and each of the characters had a backstory and well-done depth to it. I loved how it switched POVs and how it didn't get confusing or slow! The hunds were brilliant antagonists and YAY FALLEN ANGELS. Also I ship KABRINA AND BREMMA!!

Blog Tour Stop: The Corollaria by Courtney Lyn Batten

So today, I am the stop for the Corollaria Blog Tour!! I loved this book and so will you!!!

The CorollariaEmily has always felt like there was more to her parents' mysterious death, more to her being sent to live with the Lyall’s when she was fifteen. And definitely more to her inexplicable infatuation with Luke, the Lyall’s youngest son.

Luke can’t help but be drawn to Emily. She has these perfect blue eyes, unlike any he’s ever seen. And he feels a fierce need to protect her. Suddenly, one night, changes everything. He feels conflicted about his feelings and his destiny, as he and Emily are suddenly plunged into a strange new world.

Fast paced and action packed, a romance between Emily and Luke begins to take shape just as they are thrust into an ancient war, caught in the crossfire of bloodlust, revenge and love.

Below I have an interview with the author, Courtney Lyn Batten!!

Q: What was your favorite part of writing this book?

I really loved bringing Emily full circle.  I wanted a female character that was just as much the hero. That in the end it wasn’t anyone else who saved her.  She had to do that.

Q: Is this book part of a series?

No. At least not right now.  I’ve toyed with the idea of writing more because I think there is definitely more to not only Luke and Emily’s story but the other characters as well. And I really love the world I created. So…we’ll see ;)
Q:  What inspired you to write this book?

It was a few things.  At the time, my daughter was obsessed with the movie Tangled.  I really liked the idea of the magic flower and of taking the whole Rapunzel fairytale and giving it modern twist.  Also, I had written this one scene (Chapter 14) about a girl and guy caught up in a war.  I started writing, using my favorite paranormal elements and pulling inspiration from Irish fairytales.

Q: How did you model the characters’ personalities?

That’s a good question.  I think there are definitely bits of myself in Emily.  She starts out very unsure of herself and scared.  I think her relationship with Luke and through finding out the truth about her place and her family she really comes into her own.  She fulfills her destiny, so to speak.
Luke. Oh Luke.  I don’t know exactly where he came from.  Maybe a little bit from my hubby, who’s very laid back and calm like Luke.
As far as the rest of the characters, I think I just pulled bits and pieces from people I’ve known.

Q: Did you listen to music while writing? If so, what music?

Sometimes, yes.  Five Way Friday.  I love that band.  I think Luke’s band would have played music like that. A lot of indie rock, I guess.

Q: What was your writing process like?

Messy. It always is.  The first thing I wrote for this was chapter 14.  And then I went back to the beginning and wrote probably eight or nine chapters. Then I wrote this whole other part of the story and had to come back and figure out how I was going to fit that in. I ended up moving the ending and writing the last three or four chapters.  I wrote the prologue somewhere in the middle after my mama told me she wanted to know more about Samuel.
I added two or three scenes in different places (Chapter 2, and then Emily’s dream sequence) after the whole manuscript was put together.
And then I read it. And reread it. Again and again.  And every time I would change little things. A word. A sentence.  Add a sentence, delete a scene, etc.
After almost two years, it finally felt complete.

I'm kind of sad that it's not a series... Oh well, there's always hope!!

Waiting On Wednesday: The Nightmare Dilemma by Mindee Arnett

****"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event hosted by Jill at the Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.****

My Pick this Week is:

The Nightmare Dilemma by Mindee Arnett
Expected Publishing Date: March 14, 2014 by Tor Teen

Dusty Everhart might be able to predict the future through the dreams of her crush, Eli Booker, but that doesn’t make her life even remotely easy. When one of her mermaid friends is viciously assaulted and left for dead, and the school’s jokester, Lance Rathbone, is accused of the crime, Dusty’s as shocked as everybody else. Lance needs Dusty to prove his innocence by finding the real attacker, but that’s easier asked than done. Eli’s dreams are no help, more nightmares than prophecies.

To make matters worse, Dusty’s ex-boyfriend has just been acquitted of conspiracy and is now back at school, reminding Dusty of why she fell for him in the first place. The Magi Senate needs Dusty to get close to him, to discover his real motives. But this order infuriates Eli, who has started his own campaign for Dusty’s heart.

As Dusty takes on both cases, she begins to suspect they’re connected to something bigger. And there’s something very wrong with Eli’s dreams, signs that point to a darker plot than they could have ever imagined.

As we all know, I am Mindee's Super Fan (You can ask her). So I am very much dying to read this book, I mean I even made the shipping names!! And I know that this book will kill me but I loved The Nightmare Affair so It's all worth it!! Now all Mindee needs to do is give me the book!! *glares pointedly*

Blog Tour Stop: Uniquely Unwelcome by Brandy Nacole

Hi guys!! So today, I'm the stop for the Uniquely Unwelcome Blog Tour!!

Racquel is unique. The bloodlines of four of the most powerful beings in the Shadow World are intertwined within her DNA. She has never craved attention. She just wants to be able to live as normal life as she can. But she's about to find that even though she's uniquely unwelcome wherever she goes, her abilities also make her the best chance the Shadow World has to stop a threat to all the Shadow races.
Once arriving home, Racquel finds that greater evils exist and that the person she cares for most in this world, her half-sister Addie, has been kidnapped along with other Shadow World beings. Racquel finds herself facing horrible odds with those who would rather see her dead than alive.
As her journey continues, Racquel learns more about herself, what she is capable of, and that not every being looks at her as an abomination. Coy, a human captive that Racquel saves from the Vampires, starts showing kindness toward her. Racquel tries putting distance between her and the human boy but as they spend more time together it becomes harder and harder for Racquel to fight the affection she wants and needs.
But will Coy's friendship and her new found discoveries be enough to help Racquel unravel the strangest mystery that has ever plagued the Shadow World?
Ok, so down here I have an interview with the author!!
Q: What was your favorite part of introducing this world to readers?

I love the interaction with the readers.  I had one reader email me and said that she was bullied and that Racquel’s story, who is a girl that belongs nowhere (at least that is what she’s told) inspired her.  That was and still is my main goal with all my writing, to have some message that inspires readers.  I want their imagination to be fulfilled but their lives to be a little inspired as well.

Q: Is this a series?

Yes.  Blood Burdens (Book 2) is already available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the iBookstore for 0.99.  Sacrifice: A New Dawn (Book 3) will be available September 2013.

Q: Who was your favorite character to write?

Although she is not in Uniquely Unwelcome but just for one chapter, I love Queen Kaya, the majestic yet frightening Fae Queen.  She becomes more involved throughout the series and I love writing each and every cryptic scene.

Q: How did you come up with these characters’ personality?

The best relationships and work ethnic in a book are characters that have conflict, secrets, but somehow complement each other when it comes to the action.  That’s what I wanted.  I wanted my characters to be different, have their own issues, but useful to one another when the time came and they had to work together.  So each character has their own guarded, uptight, or humorous attitude, but when a fight breaks out, they use their strengths together to try and survive.

Q: What was your writing process like?
Well, I always write an outline and try to stick to it, but really I never do.  I still do this when planning a new book, but that doesn’t mean that is how it will work out.  But that is also the magical part of writing.  Even us authors get a good surprise from our imagination, which is just as much of a thrill for us as it is for the readers.

Review: Ok guys, Ya'll need to understand that I really loved this book! I loved the plot, and how it unraveled. I just fell in love with Raquel's character. I hated Ethan at first but grew to like him. I loved the rest of the character though I was surprisingly wary of Coy. I enjoyed how Raquel had her flashbacks even though they were horrific. I loved the twists and the turns! All in all, it's epic!! I can't wait to read the next one!!

Summer Author Blitz: Guest Post by Krissi Dallas

Hi Guys!! So today, I have for you a guest post by Krissi Dallas! She will help you on how to help your characters become people!! Take it away Krissi!!

When Characters Become Friends

Characters make the magic in a story.
If I can care about them, fall in love with them, cry or laugh with them, get angry at them or with them, then I’m sold. But if I never make that emotional connection with a main character, the book just becomes…forgettable.
For example, when I read Little Women, I totally understood Jo March. (What individualistic, female aspiring writer didn’t?) I got her priorities. I related to her dreams. I felt her heartaches. I asked myself the same questions when it came to my relationships and berated myself for the same seemingly dominating personality traits. I don’t remember ever really admiring Meg and her overwhelming desire to jump into marriage and motherhood. Amy seemed so self-centered and spoiled to me (though, in all honesty, she was the girl I would’ve wanted to be) and Beth… oh, dear sweet Beth. I could NEVER relate to the meek, little angel that was Beth.

Different characters grab different people for all sorts of unique reasons. That’s the fun thing about reading and writing. I think a lot of YA authors out there today get this characterization thing right. But I also feel like the pressure to create stories with more fast action and less reflection within characters sometimes comes at a cost… How well do we get to know and love these characters? And if we’re not rooting for them, do we really care what happens in the end? The story loses appeal when we lose the characterization. Don’t get me wrong. I like action. I like adventure. But I like to throw a book across the freaking room when the action and adventure stress me out so much that I am worried for that character. There have been many books brutally thrown across my room over the years for a number of reasons… to name some that I’m sure most of you have read: Catching Fire (the very end…Peeeeeeeta…Noooo…*sob, sob*), Breaking Dawn (Really, Jacob?! You imprinted on Bella’s baby?! What the WHAT!), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (NO. Not HEDWIG. I will hunt down EVERY LAST DEATH EATER if it’s the LAST thing I do.) Point being, if your book gets thrown across my room, you touched something inside me that is so volatile, so delightfully uncomfortable that I can’t read it, nor can I look away from it. It’s that part of me that genuinely LOVES those characters.

This is why, as a writer, my first priority when I sit down to pen a book is to create characters. To create LIVES. People that readers will care about. Whether you’re a young, beginner, or even longtime writer, I believe these characterization tips are always good to consider about your little creations. Keep in mind, this is totally based on my own writing and reading experience. It’s not formulaic, because PEOPLE are not products of formulas. Therefore, characters shouldn’t be either. (I could go all day on this, but these are just starting points. Ha.)

1. Keep your characters consistent!
If she is naturally a hothead, keep her that way through the whole story. She can still grow as a character, but she shouldn’t suddenly become all patient and kind and mushy over things. Keep her snarky. Keep her volatile—even as she learns to control it. If he’s rough, tough, and mysterious, don’t let him suddenly give all his secrets away and totally change his personality just for that One Girl He Loves. He should still struggle to change… I don’t know about yall, but even after 10 years of marriage, my husband and I will still default to the same struggles and personality conflicts if given the right circumstances. Responses to things can change, but personalities do not.
2. Give your characters individual traits that are unique to them.

Sometimes it’s the small, quirky things that make a character so believable. In my Phantom Island series, I have three main characters who drive the story—Whitnee, Morgan, and Caleb. I keep a list of their little quirks and I make sure they stay consistent through the series. Whitnee paces, Morgan smacks her gum, Caleb runs his hands through his hair. Whitnee has a fish phobia, Morgan always needs the bathroom, Caleb has a scar over his right eyebrow from a childhood accident brought on by a disobedient run from punishment for stealing cookies—which symbolically says that even though he acts like a Boy Scout, he has a naughty side. (SIDE NOTE: I really loooooved writing more of Caleb’s naughty side in Watercrossing. *wink, wink*) Whitnee is the Drama Queen, Morgan is the Peacemaker, Caleb is the Thinker. Decide the instincts that you want your characters to have and then go with that throughout your story. EVERY time something is happening in my story, I think of the individual traits of my three main characters and decide exactly how they would react to the event based on their histories, their personalities, and their motives. Which brings me to…
3. Write believable dialogue!
Please make your characters talk like real people. Unfortunately, I’ve read YA books that made me think, “Wow. When was the last time this person TALKED to a teenager?” As someone who primarily talks to teens every day of my life, this especially irks me. If you don’t engage in teenage conversations very much and are just writing off your own teenage recollections, you need to understand that A LOT has changed in the last twenty years, folks. Not that writing from experience is a bad thing… we all do that to a certain degree whether we like it or not. In fact, the best writing is usually when you WRITE what you KNOW. But dialogue is tricky. If you’re an adult writing teen characters, go to the movie theater and just listen in on how teens are engaging one another. (Try not to get annoyed.) Do NOT rely on stereotypes or even what TV shows and movies are displaying about teenagers. It’s just not always accurate to real life. Spend some time just listening to the ebb and flow of other people’s conversation. If you’re a teen and you need to write adult characters, listen to your parents talk to each other or how your teachers interact with one another or with you. And always remember… Dialogue should NOT be used to repeat what has already been narrated. Dialogue should offer insight to characterization or bring out new information. Don’t bore your reader with repetition.
4. Remember that characters are real people too!
Well, sort of. If they are mimicking human life, then they should act like humans. I always tell my students that characterization should be about more than just physical traits and personality. I only get one side of my students when they walk in my room once a day. Based on that, I could tell you what they wore, how they acted around others that day…I could make inferences about their mood or tell you if they’re introverted or extroverted. But I don’t see what happens when they go to their locker, how they respond when someone comes up to them with a juicy tidbit of gossip
, what they feel when a kid makes a snide remark to them about how they look that day, how many times they get yelled at or in trouble for the SAME THING every class period. I don’t follow them on the bus home and see how they act around their families or what they do for fun in their spare time. I don’t know the thoughts that run through their head when they’re away from me… But an author does. An author should see the whole scope. And an author should build characterization to show what makes that character happy, mad, sad, scared… what motivates them to get up every morning, what events in their past either make them stronger or tear them to shreds. If each of us is more than just what people see on the outside, then our characters must be more than just a stereotype. They must go deeper. They must reveal weakness AND strength. They must fail and they must conquer. They must be more than just a name on a page. Otherwise, characters will never become a reader’s friend.

And, well, life is always better with friends.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can’t determine what’s wrong, her parents decide to move to the middle of nowhere for the fresh air. She’s lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she’s helpless to change anything.

It’s an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother’s illness.
